Skeleton Key: Bone Cells May Play a Part in Regulating the Body’s Metabolism

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Insulin , the well-known blood sugar hormone, may have a newly discovered function in the body that will rattle your bones–regulating skeletal growth and breakdown.

Two new studies published online July 22 in Cell show that insulin stimulates both bone building and breakdown in mice through the hormone’s effects on two types of bone cells: bone-building osteoblasts and bone-resorbing osteoclasts. What’s more, these cells are involved in an intricate hormonal loop that in turn regulates not only insulin production, but also blood sugar levels and energy metabolism. The studies suggest that the skeleton may be an important regulator of whole-body energy metabolism, joining the ranks of known metabolic regulators such as muscle and fat. The authors conclude that their findings have important implications for understanding and treating metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes as well as bone conditions like osteoporosis .

Two Sides of the Same Coin: Gym-bots and Obese People May Share the Same Brain Pathway

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

The runner tethered to the treadmill and the couch potato gripping a bag of chips may seem like polar opposites, but new research suggests that a single alteration in the brain’s reward system could cause both obsessions.

More than one third of regular gym-goers show signs of exercise dependence, continuing to exercise even when sick or injured or arranging their lives around working out. Nearly half of all people diagnosed with an eating disorder report excessive levels of exercise to control body shape and weight and to relieve stress and improve mood. Researchers have developed two opposing hypotheses to explain how someone could become addicted to exercise, eating or any other behavior. The first hypothesis states that these people’s brains grow more sensitive to reward; they find exercise more pleasurable, so they seek it more. Alternatively, these individuals may grow less sensitive to reward; over time they begin to require more exercise to achieve the same level of pleasure.

are there any free sites that will show me some great exercises for getting rid of belly fat?

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

I think I have to clarify something for you. You cannot spot reduce weight, meaning that you can’t only lose weight from one area of your body by doing a certain exercise. So for example running won’t only help your legs and crunches won’t only make you lose weight from your belly. When you do cardio exercise, which is any exercise that gets your heart rate up and makes you sweat, your body starts burning off calories taking them from the stored carbs and fat in your body. So when you are doing cardio exercising, no matter what kind of exercise you are doing you are losing weight from the most prevalent source on your body. So if you have a big butt/thighs you’re probably taking most of your weight off from that area. The only way to flatten your stomach is to do cardio exercise and get a healthy low calorie diet. Try to stay at 1800 calories or below everyday, but don’t go too low stay above 1600 calories in a day. So to recap: 1. You can only flatten your tummy by doing cardio and you’ll end up losing weight from your whole body. 2. There are NO exercises you can do to ONLY flatten your stomach. 3. Stay between 1600 and 1800 calories in a day 4. Do about 45-60 min of cardio 4 days per week(running, stationary bike, stair master, even swimming can be cardio) 5. Out of the 1600-1800 calories in a day that you are getting at least 250-300 should be from fruits and veggies. Any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to email me. This is what I specialize in.
