I had back surgery and I took up hanging upside down or inversion therapy. I used it to help stretch my muscles and to eliminate my sciatica but I found that as I hung upside down more that my stomach muscles began to stretch out and lengthen as I hung upside down more and more, making my abs longer, flatter and more sleek. I asked my Dr. and what he said is that your ab muscles can knot upm become dense and carry toxins in them because they never usually get stretched out. His explanation was that as my abs began to stretch out new blood and oxygen began to flow through them and all the toxins and lactic acid deposits that where in them we flushed away and my abs got flatter. It makes sense when you think about it but I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Inversion therapy is what I think could work for you. Hope this helps.
References :
http://onlinehealthmart.net/index.php?c=27

Bicycle crunches. This form of exercise is proved to be much more effective than situps or crunches alone.

" Bicycle Crunch Exercise came in at the top of the list of best exercises for the rectus abdominus. This is the conclusion of a study at San Diego State University that compared 13 common abdominal exercises in order to find which ones really strengthen the abs. Each exercise was ranked for muscle stimulation (measured with EMG) in the rectus abdominis, the external obliques and internal obliques."

here is a video on how to perform these exercises

hope this helped and good luck!
References :
http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/abdominalcorestrength1/qt/Bicycle_Crunch.htm

How many sit ups do you do a day? I started my 13 year old son on a workout for his abs, he started with 250 sit ups a day and gradually raised to 500 sit ups like me. It took him about a month doing 250 sit ups a day to get from nothing to a 4 pack. You will lose a little weight unless you are already pretty skinny.
References :
I Am A Bodybuilder

you should mentally prepare your self
imagine your self with new abs, imagine, when exercising that this is flattening your abs......mentally thinking helps a lot,
References :
1st prize in the finals science fair.....

sit ups do work it just takes a long time, you are probably just inpatient, your not gonna fix your abs after a week or two, it takes time man. but if you really want to do somthing else use a arobics ball and do some of the exercises that come in the intstruction booklet, there are also many ab machines you can use at local gyms.
